The Department of Chemistry came into existence with the establishment of the college in 1964 The teaching of Chemistry was initiated by Professor (Dr) P.K. Joy with Pre degree course under the University of Kerala The department is raised to the graduate level by the introduction of B.Sc Chemistry course in 1967


Our well-equipped and spacious laboratory is one among the best under graduate chemistry laboratories in Kerala. Instrumentation facility with UV-Visible spectrometer, Continuous high intensity UV cure facility, Flame photometer, polarimeter, vacuum oven etc. The Department library has a collection of 300 highly sought chemistry books. It has got a book bank of course specific text books and a separate section for competitive examinations. Library has got a model question bank and a good collection of previous question papers. Internet facility is available for staff and students. Collection of crystal structures, molecular models and Chemistry education videos Smart class room for final year B.Sc. students.

Academic Excellence

BSc Chemistry program is one of the highly demanded course of the institution More than 75% of our students enrol for post graduate studies. Our students qualify Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM), Mahatma Gandhi University PG entrance examination, Kerala University PG entrance examination etc. Our Alumni serves as Scientists, Teachers, R&D specialists, Chemists, Government servants etc.

Extension Activities

Department prepared and distributed Sanitisers, hand wash, soap, masks for the college and public during the spread of the pandemic COVID 19 Visited the nearby schools and took motivation classes for students. Shared technological knowhow about the manufacturing of sanitation products and demonstrated the ideal hand washing procedure. Food science exhibition was conducted to give an opportunity to students to exhibit their talents in cooking and to make an awareness in food science. Quiz and presentation competitions were conducted to highlight the significance of chemistry in daily life Department has taken initiative in forming Agri club to promote organic farming and to impose interest in domestic vegetable garden. To create an awareness on energy conservation the department joined hands with Encon Club and organised various energy conservation programmes. Department played a leading role in all the gender awareness and women empowerment programmes associated the women’s cell. As an initiative to propagate the idea of “Swatch Bharath” the students cleaned the premises of the department and laboratory. Chemistry day was organised to boost the talents of chemistry fraternity. The Department started a Golden Jubilee Students Aid Fund to extend a helping hand to needy students. Department releases a manuscript magazines Thanmatra (by chemistry students) and Little chef ( by open course students)
