Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology was established in July 1964 and the first B.Sc. batch was started in 1967 under the headship of Prof. Raju Kurian.

The eminent faculty members of yesteryears have laid a strong foundation for the department, which has been providing quality education and training in the field of Zoology. The Department, through the dissemination of knowledge and imparting training to younger generations, has served the society for the past 58 years and has produced 53 batches till date.

Zoology is the science that is closely related to the basic existence of human beings and other organisms and deals with the study of animals and their environment. Knowledge on the structure and function, relationships, development, physiology, biochemistry, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, ecology, evolution and frontier areas like biotechnology, molecular biology and bioinformatics will provide a comprehensive understanding on animals and their interactions with the surrounding world.

The Department with a sanctioned strength of 40 students, offers a three-year B.Sc. course with Zoology as the main subject and Chemistry and Botany as subsidiaries, and Agricultural pest management as an elective subject. Further, the department also offers an open course for the students of other departments. The department has a highly qualified, four-member faculty specialized in various areas of Zoology. It has all the basic infrastructural facilities including smart classrooms with audio-visual facilities, computers and internet, a well-equipped laboratory, an excellent museum with more than 1000 specimens and numerous charts, models and slides, and a departmental library with more than 500 books.

Apart from the routine theory and practical classes, we conduct regular field experience trips including visits to research and scientific institutions and places of zoological importance, nature camps, invited talks and training programmes. Various group activities like aquarium management, vermicomposting, beekeeping, posters and model designing, etc. are also carried out. The Department also serves as a regional center for the ‘Collaboratively Understanding Biology Education’ (CUBE) facilitated by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai

The Zoological Association of the department carries out various student-oriented activities. Conducts ‘Animal Science Aptitude Test’ in association with Zoological Society of Kerala annually. The association also publishes ‘Biospectrum’ a newsletter and ‘Zooscript’ an annual in-house, handwritten magazine aimed at bringing out the talents of the students.
